The bus coupler recognizes all plugged-in I/O terminals and uses them to create a local process image. This can involve a mixed arrangement of analog (data exchange word by word) and digital (data exchange bit by bit) terminals. The image is displayed in the memory of the responsible controller via the PROFIBUS fieldbus. The local process image is divided into an input and an output data area. The process data can be read in via the PROFIBUS and further processed in a controller. The process output data are output via the PROFIBUS. The data from the analog terminals are stored in the automatically created process image in the order of their position after the bus coupler. The bits of the digital terminals are combined into bytes and appended to the analog data. If the number of digital I/Os is greater than 8 bits, the coupler automatically starts another byte.
