What is a motion detector?

What is the difference between presence detectors and motion detectors?

Basically, a distinction is made between conventional presence detectors / motion detectors and devices for building automation. Presence detectors can usually also be used as motion detectors. The differences and significant advantages of a presence detector compared to a motion detector lie in the more variable usability. While motion detectors carry out a simple light measurement, presence detectors constantly measure daylight and/or mixed light with a special sensor. This has a spectral sensitivity similar to that of the human eye. In contrast to motion detectors, disturbances caused by artificial light are avoided.

Briefly explained using the example of an automatic door: If there is sufficient brightness during the day, the lighting should not be activated while the door should open when a presence is detected. Both should be switched on when it is dark. You can usually implement this function via several channels in the presence detector. Use the motion detection channel to switch the lighting depending on the brightness. You can use the presence detection channel to switch other consumers, in this case the door opener, regardless of the brightness.

We recommend not choosing a detection area that is too large. Use additional detectors to ensure uninterrupted surveillance. The investment in additional technology is low compared to a system that works poorly or not at all.

Pay attention to the necessary degrees of protection if a detector is exposed to moisture, the weather or mechanical influences. Clean the sensor regularly. By avoiding sources of interference, you ensure proper function and eliminate false signals. Sources of interference include:

Why is my motion detector or presence detector not working properly?

Proper functioning depends on various factors. Was the installation carried out correctly? Is the device suitable for the intended purpose? The malfunction often lies in a detection range that is not optimally set. Control the direction, angle of view and distance to the target area.

The fewer movements you expect in the monitored area, the longer you should choose the follow-up time.
